Allyson was last seen in Kansas City, Missouri on March 4, 2009. Two days later, her mother, Katia Lainez, was found murdered inside their apartment in the 4000 block of Harvard Circle, near Interstate 70 and Sterling Avenue. Allyson was missing and presumed to be abducted by the killer(s).
Lainez and Luis Corrales-Sanchez, Allyson’s father, had dated for many years. They are both from Honduras and had met before they moved to the United States. After the couple separated in November 2008, Luis was reportedly very upset and begged, cajoled and threatened Lainez to try to get her to get back together with him. Lainez, who had sole custody of Allyson, filed for an order of protection against Luis. She told the court that Luis had threatened to kill her if she ever left him. He was ordered to stay away from her and Allyson, and also to make child support payments of $400.00 a month. Lainez’s relatives stated she was afraid of Luis and described him as a jealous man.
Luis is an illegal immigrant who had been living and working in San Antonio, Texas, but had come to Kansas City to visit Allyson a few days before the child’s disappearance. He told Lainez he had no place to stay and she invited him to live in her apartment for a short time, in spite of the protection order she had against him. Lainez spoke to relatives on the phone the night before her murder, and they heard Luis arguing in the background.
Luis could not be found after Lainez’s murder. His vehicle was found parked at Lainez’s apartment, but her red 1999 Kia Sportage with Missouri license plate number PB1 R3R was missing. Authorities found it wrecked in San Antonia on March 31. Someone else had possession of it. The driver said Luis had given him the car in return for enough money to buy two bus tickets to Mexico, for Allyson and himself. The driver drove Luis and Allyson to a Greyhound bus terminal, where they boarded a bus heading to El Salvador.
Authorities had long considered Luis a person of interest in Lainez’s murder, but many months passed before DNA testing confirmed he’d been in her home at the time of the attack. Legal issues with child custody prevented them from issuing a kidnapping warrant, although they had believed he had taken Allyson; with Lainez’s death, custody automatically reverted to the next of kin, meaning Luis. Therefore, legally he has a right to take the child. It wasn’t until investigators got the DNA results that they could officially name Luis as the prime suspect in Lainez’s murder and issue warrants for him.
Luis has relatives in Houston, Texas and Manassas, Virginia, and he and Allyson may be in either of those areas. They could also be in Honduras or El Salvador. Allyson is considered to be endangered due to the circumstances involved in her disappearance.
CAUTION IS ADVISED
