TODDLER MAY BE BLINDED AFTER DEVASTATING ABUSE AT THE HANDS OF HER MOTHER, AMY ROBERTS, AND HER BOYFRIEND, DERRICK LEE CRISPIN

4Derrick Lee Crispin, 29, and Amy Roberts, 30, were each charged in 3rd District Court with eight counts of child abuse, a second-degree felony, and one count of obstructing justice, a third-degree felony, stemming from injuries Roberts daughter sustained.

Lt. Paul Jaroscak of the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office said investigators interviewed Crispin and Roberts after doctors at St. Mark’s Hospital questioned injuries to the toddler when the couple came to the hospital about 1 a.m. A sheriff’s deputy at the hospital observed blood on the toddler’s hands and face along with bruises and other injuries.  The toddler’s injuries weren’t consistent with how the couple said the girl hurt herself, said Jaroscak, who called the case among the “most devastating” he’s seen.

Charging documents state that doctors at Primary Children’s Medical Center – where the toddler was sent because of her extensive injuries – examined the girl and found chemical burns on the toddler’s face, hands and eyes, which were swollen shut. The burns on the girl’s eyes caused severe corneal damage that could result in her losing her vision, according to the documents.  The girl also suffered haemorrhages in both eyes and at least 50 cuts on her hands. Doctors discovered seven broken bones in her left hand and five in her right, which they believe were caused by “violent squeezing or blows directly to the hands,”.  Patches of her hair were missing as were two teeth and what looked like an apparent knife wound near her temple, injuries which doctors said were consistent with blunt force trauma.  Roberts told detectives that she and Crispin, her live-in boyfriend, used a syringe to reduce swelling in the toddler’s hands on Monday, hence the child’s cut up hands.  The documents do not elaborate why or how the syringe was used or why the child’s hands were swollen.

This is the part where I wish I could say justice for this little girl was achieved, but as usual, it was not.  Not even close.  Derrick Lee Crispin has been sentenced to up to 5 years in prison for child abuse/neglect and obstruction of justice, both third degree felonies.  Amy Roberts was sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice, a third degree felony, and class A misdemeanor child abuse/neglect.

Here’s how the story was laid out by Crispin’s lawyer.  According to him, Roberts and Crispin had previously take the little girl to the hospital and were told the child MAY have cellulitis, or an infection in the skin tissue.  After taking heavy doses of opiates, Crispin and Roberts developed a brilliant plan …. Turns out being high and brilliant plans, never happen together.  These two idiots decided that they were going to perform a medical procedure themselves and drain some pus from the child’s hands.  Roberts held her baby girls hands while Crispin made cuts on them and tried to suck the pus out (suck it out – please dear God tell me that isn’t what I think they truly mean).  After this they decided to put iodine on the little girls hands, when the little go proceeded to touch her hands to her eyes (likely wiping away those tears), getting the iodine in her eyes.

Here’s what I think – that is CRAP.  This little girl suffered over 50 cuts to her hands, 12 broken bones in her hands and irritation in both eyes that could very likely could have caused vision loss, permanently disabling this beautiful baby girl for the rest of her life.  Do their sentences seem equal to that?  Is this really how we are going to punish people who abuse children, if they simply say, oops, I was high?  I say add an extra 10 years to a life sentence just for trying to use the ridiculous excuse of being high!!  When a cop pulls an erratic driver over and the driver says, oh sorry man, I’m just pretty high – does the cop say ohhhh, that explains everything, have nice night sir?  Not in the world I live in.  If these two had committed the same crimes against a dog, they would have gotten a stiffer sentence.

The one shining light in this story is that the little girls biological father, Randy Montambo, has obtained full custody of her, and by all accounts is a responsible loving father.  Thankfully a miracle was granted and this baby girl’s eyesight is fine.  Physically she is doing well, except for the scars covering her little hands.  Psychologically though, the full extent won’t be known for a while.  I can’t imagine the nightmares she has, and the complete sense of betrayal that her own mother is responsible for what happened to her.  As she grows, she will find herself having to explain her scars to friends, classmates, future partners, and each time someone asks, how did you get those scars, she will be forced to relive the nightmare that nearly blinded her.

It’s sad when a victim of child abuse, serves a life sentence due to the abuse, while her abusers get to move on after a year.

  1. Derrick is the brother of my son’s wife. This isn’t the first time he has been accused of child abuse. There were allegations of a problem with a little boy prior to this. I am also aware of the possibility of another child he may have abused, my grandaughter. She never told me her uncle did anything , but he was living at their home. She was behaving unusually provacative at the age of five and showed me signs of possible sexual abuse. I asked her mother about the possibility of abuse of her daughter by her uncle and I have never seen my granddaughter since then.

    • I can’t imagine how that must feel for you. I would be devestated.
I would likt to thank you though, Thank you for remaing vigilant and not ignoring the early warning signs of child abuse. Most people ignore the situation claiming not to want to ruin lives. You Ma’am have not looked the other way. I don’t know if you have called authorities or not regarding the suspected abuse, but I would highly recommend that you do.
You are in my thoughts, if there is anything we can do to help and support you, just ask away.
And again, thank you for not looking the other way.
