Leon and Molli McClaran

Leon and Molli McClaran

On September 23, 2012, the home that Gage and Chloie shared with their grandparents, Molli and Leon McClaran, went up in flames.  Tragically both of their grandparents died in the fire, and for a while it was presumed the children died in the fire as well.  Cadaver dogs were brought in to locate the family’s remains, and were only able to find the bodies of the grandparents.  Several fire experts were called in in an effort to locate the children’s remains, however even after using infrared cameras attached to helicopters to scour the scene, they were unable to turn up anything.  This caused authorities to begin to question whether the children were even at home when the fire started or not.  And if they were not, where could they possibly be?  Either way, Gage and Chloie’s welfare is a huge concern.

Police questioned everyone who knew the kids, including their parents, but they have no suspects, and in fact are not even sure if they have a crime.  The key that may unlock the answers to this case may lay with how the fire started, was it accidental or intentional?  And if it is intentional, who would have the motive to do this?

5 days after the tragic fire, authorities issued an Amber Alert for Gage and Chloie.  Authorities have stated they are still unsure of their children’s whereabouts, and still have experts coming in to examine what remains of the home looking for the children’s bodies.  Even for the most experienced experts, the process of combing through the debris is a slow and tedious one.  A piece of dry wall and a part of a human skull look very similar when burnt.  However authorities also have to remain attentive to what may have happened to these two children if they were not in the fire.

Months have passed since that night, and with no remains uncovered, Gage and Chloie are officially classified as missing.  There are no leads as to where the children are or what may have happened to them.  However, their families will not give up.  They continue to search for the children and raise awareness of the case in hopes that someone will come forward with new information.  With no remains being found, and no children located, the case remains a nightmare for the family.  Until they are able to gather answers to all their questions, they will never have closure.  There is still hope in finding the children, and hope can be a very powerful thing.

It has now been a year since the horrific fire that claimed the lives of Leon and Mollie McClaran, which Gage and Chloie were assumed to have perished in.  Cheryl Leverette Daniel, the children’s mother, has stated that she believes that her children are still alive and holds onto the hope of seeing them again.  Multiple agencies and professionals were brought in to sift through the remains of the fire in hopes of identifying the victims.  Gage and Chloie’s grandparents remains were located, but there has never been any discovery of the children’s remains, causing the case to potentially become a missing child one.

Investigators have had their hands full as they investigate the fire and all that surrounds it while at the same time investigating the possibility the Gage and Chloie are still alive.  It is possible that the children did in fact perish in the fire, however with no remains found, the investigation must remain a dual one, investigating where these two children may be if they are in fact alive.

This year has been a rough one for Cheryl who was not only hit with the death of her parents, but the disappearance of her children all at the same time.  She has stated that it is the hope of finding Gage and Chloie that drive her to get up each day.  She is fighting to keep her children in the spotlight.  “They found the bones of my parents and the bones of a bird but no bones of my children,” Cheryl stated.  “It’s like after people saw the headline ‘4 dead in fire’ they gave up looking for them because law enforcement said they were dead.  I don’t want people to give up looking.  They were not victims of the fire.”

The case still remains very much actively open.  Sheriff Randall Boyce has stated “We’re still getting a few leads from people who think they know something, we still keep looking and hoping something turns up.”  He went on to comment on how this case has affected everyone involved.  “We’ve lost more sleep over this than anything else since I’ve been sheriff.  When it’s children it touches home with all of us guys.  I have grandchildren the same age.  It touches our hearts.”  Sheriff Boyce went on to say that he understands Cheryl’s feelings.  “We’re going to continue to look.  We’re not going to take it for granted that they died.  We’re going to continue to look until we find something solid one way or the other.

A rally to raise support and awareness for several Bedford County missing people, including Gage and Chloie, will be held this Sunday, September 29, 2013 at 3 p.m. at the Bedford County Agriculture Center.  The public is encouraged to attend and show their support to all of the families.
