Search For Dylan Redwine

Search For Dylan Redwine

Dylan was visiting his father, Mark Redwine, in Vallecito, CO for the weekend when he disappeared.  He normally resides with his mother, Elaine Redwine, in Colorado Springs.  There are very few leads to go on in Dylan’s disappearance, and without much information, the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office does not have a suspect in this case.  Immediately after Dylan disappeared, Law enforcement, joined with a dive team, searched a portion of Vallecito Lake for Dylan.  Cadaver dogs were used in the search and they did pick up a human scent under the lake, but divers were unable to locate anything.  A couple months later, in February of 2013, volunteer searchers returned to the lake for a secondary search and had the cadaver dogs work in the area again.  They even went so far as to cut open parts of the lake to see of the dogs would signal a hit without all of the ice being in the way.  According to K9 Forensics of Edgewood, two cadaver dogs picked up a scent in the same place after the holes were punched into the frozen lake.  Despite the dogs picking up a scent, it remains that the source of the scent has not been found, and we are no closer to understanding where Dylan is.

It is no surprise to those who know Dylan and his family that Dylan’s home life has been filled with turmoil.  His parents rarely speak, and before Dylan’s disappearance they had not even seen each other in 3 years.  Elaine insists that Mark is involved in their son’s disappearance, a claim which Mark vehemently denies.  The family made an appearance on the Dr. Phil show and the hostility within the family was quickly revealed.  Accusations were thrown out there that Mark has never been a father figure, that Elaine has a drinking problem.  Mark believes Dylan was abducted when he was walking to a friend’s house six miles away from his home near Vallecito Lake.  He also made a comment early on that I can’t help but think may have more to do with this case than any of the other scenarios currently being thrown around.  He stated that he worried that Dylan was seeing everything going on between his parents and Dylan felt very much in the middle and torn between them.  While both parents state that Dylan is not the type of child to run away, I think it has to be considered that this may have been a factor in Dylan’s disappearance.  Dylan may have been upset the night he disappeared and went for a walk in the dark, getting lost easily while dealing with all the emotions that are going through a young man when he knows his parents are acting like children.  I am not stating that I think Dylan ran away, which was ruled out by law enforcement anyway although they did not reveal what caused them to come to this determination, but I am saying that I think the immature, volatile and anger charged relationship within Dylan’s family must have left Dylan feeling pretty upset, and when children especially, let alone teenagers, are upset, they can make rash decisions.

On Dylan’s 14th birthday, only months after he disappeared, his family celebrated with cake and balloons despite Dylan’s absence.  They are keeping the hope that Dylan will be brought home soon.

A reward of over $50,000.00 is being offered for any information leading to the recovery of Dylan Redwine.

It has been 7 months since Dylan Redwine disappeared, and sadly, searchers have located the young man’s remains.  DNA tests have confirmed that the remains found near Middle Mountain Road in Vallecito, Colorado, are the remains of Dylan Redwine.  While the case is developing and still being pieced together, one thing authorities have made clear, is that this is a homicide.  No suspects have been named, but they do know that someone, not some animal or an accident, is responsible for Dylan’s death.

The entire Redwine family is devastated, and the tensions between the two sides of the family are reaching an all time high.  Dylan’s older brother, and best friend, Corey, has said that the family is hanging in there, turning the hope they had that Dylan would return home alive, into the hope that they receive justice for Dylan.  While fingers are still being pointed, authorities have stressed that all family members have been fully cooperating with the investigation.

The Search for Dylan Redwine

At this time, investigators have only located 2% of Dylan’s remains, leaving 98% of his remains unaccounted for.  This hits Dylan’s father, Mark, especially hard, as the remains were found only 10 miles from his home.  45 law enforcement officers and search and rescue workers conducted a search stretching along 12 miles of Middle Mountain Road.  They worked more than 1,600 man hours during the 5 day search before discovering Dylan’s remains.  Middle Mountain Road is a rugged, unpaved road that runs parallel to the road Mark Redwine lives on.  Investigators told Mark that they had found only 4 or 5 of Dylan’s bones and he had been ravaged by wildlife.  Despite this, investigators have determined that the cause of death is homicide.  While conducting the search, they also located a piece of Dylan’s shirt, one sock and his shoestrings, but not the backpack or other items he had with him when he went missing.

When a reporter spoke with Mark Redwine over the phone, he stated “It’s my worst nightmare come true.  All I have on my mind right now is to reach out to Elaine and Corey, figure out what we need to do as his parents to give him a proper burial, because I think he deserves that.”  Despite his attempt to reach out to Elaine in an effort to come together to lay their son to rest, she has remained hostile and resistant.  Mark has stated that on the day Dylan’s remains were identified, Elaine was driving through town, spotted Mark on the street, rolled down her window and yelled “MURDERER” at him.

Elaine Redwine released her own statement reading: “Dylan’s mother, Elaine, Mike and his brother Cory, as well as other members of Dylan’s family have been without Dylan for seven months now. Each of those days held a glimmer of hope that they would see Dylan again. Yesterday, that hope vanished with the confirmation that our sweet, innocent Dylan had passed. The news was a crushing blow to the entire family as well as to so many of Dylan’s supporters and friends, locally and around the world. The family would like to thank everyone who has assisted the search process by donating their time, energy or money as well as those who continued spreading Dylan’s picture around the world. We would also like to thank law enforcement for your continued efforts and thorough searches and thank all the business owners who so willingly hung Dylan’s posters in their windows in an effort to bring him home. While we have found him, we still do not know what happened to him and are determined to find out. While we continue to honor our sweet boy Dylan, our next mission is to get Justice for Dylan. We hope that everyone who has helped spread Dylan’s face will now help us work to uncover the details of his disappearance and death. If anyone out there has any information that could help us bring justice, please contact the La Plata Sheriff’s department. Children are the light in this world and we need to do what we can to keep other families and communities from tragedies such as this.”

At this time the only service planned is the candlelight vigil in Bayfield this evening.  As other services are planned, information will be shared at finddylan.com.

The bottom line here is that a little boy has been murdered, and that has dropped on his family like a ton of bricks.  Hope can be a powerful thing to help someone get up each morning and face another day where their child is missing, and having that hope removed is horrific.  However, through all of this, I would like to think that each parent could set aside the anger, confusion and fear for a single moment, and lay their son to rest in the respectful way that he truly deserves.  Nobody is asking them to hold hands or forget their concerns, just simply to have a moment of calm – a moment dedicated to Dylan’s memory.

Dylan’s case has always had a lot of drama circling around it, family members pointing fingers at each other, accusations being made, fighting on TV talk shows, the list goes on.  Whether or not any accusations made are founded or not, we all need to step aside for a moment.  We need to take a time out, and honor the beautiful life that Dylan had, and the joy, vibrancy and vitality that this young man maintained even through family turmoil.  The chips will fall where they fall as more is learnt about Dylan’s murder, there will be plenty of time to scrutinize this young man’s death.  However, now is the time to celebrate his life.  So I ask each and every one of you to light a candle for Dylan this evening, and rather than focusing on the bad, focus on the good that Dylan brought to this world.  Remember Dylan for the light he brought into this world, and know that while this young man was ripped from this world long before it was his time, his light will continue to shine bright, as he helps to light the way home for other children.

While Dylan’s remains have now been located, we will continue to follow the story and make any updates as we receive new information.
