TWO DAYCARE EMPLOYEES, ROSIE HICKS AND TRACY OWENS, FEED 13 MONTH OLD HABANERO SAUCE WHILE LAUGHING – UPDATE 09.09.2013 – CCA0048

TWO DAYCARE EMPLOYEES FEED 13 MONTH OLD HABANERO SAUCE WHILE LAUGHING

24Day Cares.  Day Cares are safe places where we bring our children to learn and thrive while we are away working to support our families.  Day care workers are kind and gentle people.  They feed our children well balanced meals, sing songs, finger paint and read stories.  Day cares are happy, healthy and all around good places.  Well …. at least they are supposed to be.

At Muscogee Creek Daycare in Oklahoma, two workers were found to have given a 13-month old habanero sauce while denying him anything to drink.  Rosie Hicks, 49 and Tracy Owens, 36, fed the baby boy a plate of green beans doused in the sauce and laughed while the baby boy screamed in obvious distress and pain.  Surveillance footage showed the entire incident in a 66 minute video.

When the two women were confronted by authorities, Owens claimed that feeding the baby hot sauce was Hicks idea, while Hicks denied ever doing anything wrong.  Eventually Hicks confessed and admitted to sending Owens out to purchase the habanero sauce.  Hicks further admitted to making the baby boy fall by pushing away a table while he was trying to balance himself on against it and laughing.  Hicks blames the stress of her job for her actions.

Chief Ed Smith had stated that it appeared jealousy was behind the cruel treatment of the baby boy.  He says one of the day care workers had taken a special interest in the child, and this made the other workers mad.  They took their anger out on the toddler.  While Hicks prepared the meals for all the children, she only laced the baby boy’s food with the habanero sauce.  Meanwhile, Owens watched by, never attempting to stop the incident from happening, and was even seen laughing herself when the baby was screaming from the burning pain in his mouth.

At the time that the incident occurred, there were 8 workers and 10 children present in the facility.  When officials learnt of the abuse, both women were immediately fired from the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Child Development Center.  The baby boy is now in another day care centre.  The director of the MCN Childcare Program conducted an assessment of the program and took appropriate action in re-staffing the facility.

Kicks and Owens were both arrested on charges of felonious child abuse.  Owens was released on a $10,000.00 bail and Hicks was released on a $20,000.00 bail.

Rosie Hicks later pled guilty to one count of child abuse by injury and no contest to another child abuse charge.  Hicks received an eight year suspended sentence, but was required to serve eight months in Okfuskee County Jail.

Tracy Owens will be sentenced later this month.
