17 MONTH OLD ROY ANTONIO JONES III MURDERED BY HIS MOTHER’S BOYFRIEND, PEDRO JONES, FOR ‘ACTING LIKE A GIRL’

Roy Antonio Jones III was a beautiful, happy baby boy.  He brought joy and love to all those around him.  His life was filled with promise and hope, and he was the center of his mother’s, Vanessa Jones, world.  It only took one monster to shatter all of this.

Pedro Jones (no relation to Vanessa or Roy) was dating Vanessa Jones and sharing a home with Vanessa and Roy on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton.  Vanessa trusted him enough to allow him to babysit Roy.  I doubt she will ever trust another completely again.

While babysitting Roy on August 1, 2010, Pedro became enraged at how the baby boy was ‘acting like a girl’, which led to him punching Roy in the chest so hard, that the baby boy went into cardiac arrest.  Pedro then proceeded to hit Roy a few more times before choking the baby boy.  Roy was taken to Southampton Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

At the beginning of the investigation, Pedro was initially charged with first degree manslaughter.  It took only days for a grand jury to indict him on charges of murder and endangering the welfare of a child.  Pedro Jones pled guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison as a part of his plea bargain.

Pedro’s defense attorney maintained that Vanessa Jones shared some responsibility in her son’s death, however, Judge Hames Hudson is a smart man and stated during sentencing that he was offended by the suggestion that anyone other than Pedro was responsible.  Child Protective Services had done an investigation and found absolutely no evidence to support the allegation that Vanessa was also responsible in some form.

During the sentencing Vanessa told the court that her son’s murder “destroyed everyone in my family”.  She went on to say that her life without her “one of a kind” son is without purpose.  Roy’s grandfather made a statement saying “He infiltrated my family through our trust, through the heart of my daughter, and then he stole the life of her child.  I hope the justice system turns around and steals his.”

Even after sentencing, Pedro went on to make statements which further incriminated himself and admitted that this was not the first time he had struck baby Roy.

“This was an accident, Roy was like my son, I never did anything like this.  Vanessa and I planned on getting married.  I was trying to make him act like a boy instead of a little girl.  I never struck that kid that hard before – a onetime mistake, and I’m going to do 20 years.”

I am at a loss for words when trying to imagine how a 17 month old baby acts like a little girl instead of a little boy …. he’s a baby, he acts like a baby, he acts like himself.  This ridiculous hyper masculinity is impossible for a rational person to understand.  Acceptance of children for who they are is a vital part in building a child’s confidence in themselves, which will eventually allow them to take on the world and follow their dreams.  This ‘excuse’ should only add to the justice Pedro deserves.  I can’t help but feel that we fell short and did not even come close to obtaining justice for Roy.  Is 16 years really equivalent to the life of a baby boy?

  1. Jesus Tapdancing Christ, some men’s masculinities are so fragile. Do other women ever feel like their femininity is being degraded or disrespected? I can’t say I have, but for some reason maleness is something that can be put in jeopardy if exposed to anything, however subtle, that isn’t violent and callous to women, children and animals.
