De’Anthony was abducted by his 14-year old neighbor, Dor’Sayde Gathright.  According to De’Anthony’s mother, 25-year old Latonya Kelley, claims that she was at a friend’s house when another friend of hers who also happened to be a neighbor, went to her mother’s, Bernadine Kelley, apartment where De’Anthony was and took him back to her apartment to change his diaper and keep him for the night.  When she spoke with her friend at 10:30 PM, she was told that De’Anthony was asleep.  At about 7:00 AM the next morning, Latonya went to her friend’s apartment to pick up her baby boy.  When she arrived, her friend told her that her daughter, Gathright, had taken the baby to a friend’s house.  It turns out that at 1:30 AM that morning, someone witnessed Gathright and another unknown female getting into a 2010 silver Dodge Charger, driven by an unknown black male, along with De’Anthony.  No one was too concerned yet, as Gathright had watched De’Anthony before and had also been returned home safely with everything fine.

Latonya began to call around, trying to find Gathright and De’Anthony.  When her calls were not returned or answered, the concern began to rise.  By 3:00 PM, Latonya was so concerned that she called police to report her baby boy missing and an investigation was launched.  With no indication as to why Gathright would even take De’Anthony, authorities and the family relied on tips coming in to the family.  They believed it may be possible that the group was heading to Mississippi, but they believed that as of that time, they were still in Birmingham, moving from place to place and car to car.

With De’Anthony still missing, his family has gathered together.  Latonya said “At times I feel dead cold inside and other times I feel the devil has lit a fire inside me.  I feel helpless, I’m hurt and confused.  I’m angry as hell. I blame myself.”  Bernadine has stated “I can’t even make up a reason why she took the baby, all I can say is we want our baby back.”  Bernadine has also voiced that her daughter shouldn’t blame herself, no one should blame her.  I couldn’t agree more, this poor woman had no reason to suspect anything at all would happen to her son.  Her friend and her friend’s daughter had watched De’Anthony before and there were never any problems or concerns.  Latonya described De’Anthony, the youngest of three boys, as a happy baby.  “He is so happy, As soon as he opens his eyes in the morning, he’s smiling.  I feel like someone took a part of me.”
