Hannah and Ethan Anderson were reported missing by their grandparents. In a tragic turn, the body of their mother, Christina Anderson, was discovered in a burning home near the US – Mexico border, belonging to James Dimaggio.
Along with Christina’s body, a body of a dog was found in the home where Dimaggio lived alone, and the body of a child was found in the house’s detached garage.
It was determined that Christina had been murdered, and Dimaggion is the prime suspect. As for the body of the child, the cause of death nor identity have been released. Authorities have stated that Dimaggion was in a close “platonic relationship” with Christina.
It is strongly believed that Dimaggio has abducted Hannah and Ethan and may be heading to either Texas, Mexico or Canada with them. They may be travelling in a blue 2013 Nissan Versa with California license plates 6WCU986.
A felony warrant for murder was issued for Dimaggio on August 6, 2013.
Dimaggio may be armed – EXTREME CAUTION IS ADVISED.
In the next few days following the abduction, Hannah and Ethan’s father, Brett Anderson, made a plea through the media to Jim Dimaggio begging him to release his daughter.
“Jim, I can’t fathom what you were thinking. The damage is done. I’m begging you to let my daughter go. You’ve taken everything else. Hannah, we all love you very much. If you have a chance, you take it, you run. You’ll be found.”
No official statements have been released regarding the confirmation of the identity of the body of the child found in the burning garage, but all signs and speculations point to the burned body belonging to Ethan. I can’t imagine why else the children’s father would not refer to his son at all in the statement.
It has now come to light that Dimaggio had told Hannah that he had a crush on her and would dater her if she was his age. Hannah’s friend, Marissa Chavez, claims he told Hannah this a couple of months ago when he was driving the two girls to a high school gymnastics meet. Feeling uncomfortable, Hannah asked Chavez to join her from then on whenever they went to meets and Dimaggio was driving. Chavez describes Hannah as ‘freaked out’, expressing to her friend that she did not want to be alone with Dimaggio.
Police have received tips of sightings of Dimaggio’s car in Oregan. It has not yet been confirmed if the car truly belonged to Dimaggio.
Police have received tips of sightings of Dimaggio’s car in Oregon. It has not yet been confirmed if the car truly belonged to Dimaggio. However in the past few days, numerous tips have begun to come in from Oregon and Washington.
A candlelight vigil was held by family and friends for Hannah and Ethan, where balloons were released.
As the days go by, the picture developing surrounding Hannah and Ethan’s case only grows more dim, and disturbing. Authorities have now confirmed that the child’s burnt body, is in fact Ethan Anderson. They were able to obtain Ethan’s DNA from the bone marrow in his body.
Brett Anderson has stated that he now mourning the loss of his son and even more fearful for his daughter’s life. The community has been rocked, and the grief that is outpouring with the confirmation of Ethan’s death is hard not to feel. Those who know Dimaggio are just shocked at what has been unfolding, and are horrified that the man they apparently didn’t actually know all that well, still has Hannah.
On Friday morning (August 9, 2013), Dimaggio’s car was located in a remote area of Idaho in very “rough terrain”. The car had been covered by brush and the license plates had been removed. Authorities were able to confirm it was Dimaggio’s car through the vehicle identification number.
Not long after, some campers on horseback spotted Dimaggio and Hannah, about 6 miles from where the car was found. At the time they did not realize they were wanted and missing, but noted the two looked a little out of place with light camping gear in the vast and rugged terrain. From the time when they finally realized who they were and reported the sighting to police, Dimaggi and Hannah were gone. The campers described the pair as being in good health, and it appears that Hannah is not being kept against her will.
Her father and grandfather have both expressed concern for Hannah’s safety as explanation for the girl’s behaviour. Anything is possible in what Dimaggio may have told Hannah, and it is possible that she was told if she tried to ask for help, she and others may die.
It also turns out that Dimaggio had purchased camping gear two weeks prior to the murder of Christina and probably Ethan, indicating that this was planned.
A massive search has been launched in the area with hundreds of officials, searchers on horseback and ATV’s and canines, in hopes of finding the pair. Their main concern remains bringing Hannah home.
Authorities have released a statement saying that James Dimaggio may very well have homemade explosives with him.
DO NOT APPROACH DIMAGGIO IF SIGHTED.
EXTREME CAUTION IS ADVISED
August 10, 2013 – The tragic nightmare of the Anderson’s story has finally come to an end. Now it is time to let the healing begin, and Brett and Hannah will need our thoughts and prayers to help them get through this still difficult time.
This morning, the massive search for Christian and Ethan’s murdered and Hannah’s kidnapper, came to a climax when authorities located Dimaggio and Hannah in the Idaho wilderness. The campsite where Hannah and Dimaggio were staying was actually spotted from the air. An FBI hostage recovery team then trekked to the site near Morehead Lake. After a standoff, authorities were forced to shoot Dimaggio, killing him. An investigation is being done into what happened during the recovery, and more details will be released once it is complete. An investigation such is this one is required anytime an officer discharges a weapon. Hannah has been taken to a hospital where her father Brett will meet her. Authorities, medical staff and FBI victim specialists are ensuring that they are getting Hannah and Brett all of the care they will need, physically, mentally, psychologically, and emotionally.
Devastatingly, Hannah’s nightmare has far from ended. When Hannah was recovered, she did not know that her mother and brother had been murdered. It was not until authorities began to interview her, that she learned of the murders. Sheriff Bill Gore has stated “to make it very clear, Hannah is a victim in every sense of the word.”, confirming what everyone already believed to be true, that she was not a willing participant in ANY of the circumstances surrounding her abduction. Dimaggio threatened Hannah, making her fear for her life. Remember, with Hannah unaware that her family was murdered, Dimaggio very likely kept Hannah quiet by threatening to not only harm her, but her family as well.
The four people on horseback were, Mark and Christa John, and Mary and Mike Young. Mark John is a former county sheriff, and has stated that the 4 actually spoke with Hannah and Dimaggio on two separate occasions.
Mark says red flags were immediately raised for him. “He might have been an outdoorsman in California, but he wasn’t an outdoorsman in Idaho.” The second time that the group spotted that pair, Mark says they were in different gear from what they were wearing before and were heading in the opposite direction of where they had initially said they were going.
The group noticed that Hannah appeared scared, but she was OK physically. Another red flag was Hannah’s attire. She wasn’t wearing clothes suitable for hiking, instead wearing pajama pants and a sweater. Dimaggio and Hannah didn’t want to speak to the group at all, and Hannah kept trying to turn her face away. Mike Young recalls how after meeting up with Dimaggio and Hannah, he turned to his wife and friends, and said that there was something wrong here. ‘It just wasn’t right.” When they met with the pair a second time, the group attempted to make conversation and joke with Hannah. Mark recalls Hannah said “Looks like we’re all in trouble now” or “We’re in real trouble now.”
The group then continued their ride down to the lake, and Dimaggio and Hannah followed. Christa recalls how Hanna was just sitting there. “I just felt I should go over and kind of see if she needed help and make contact with her. I’m glad I didn’t because that could have turned out terribly wrong for the four of us.”
Sara Britt, Hannah’s maternal grandmother said of the reunion, “We have to focus on burying my daughter and my grandson who were murdered, and that’s something we’ll take a long time to deal with. But the positive note is Hannah coming home.”
When asked about Dimaggio being killed, she said that the family was glad to know that Dimaggi wouldn’t be able to menace their family, nor would they have to go through a lengthy trial. “I wouldn’t want to see anyone dead, but it happened. We are excited to have our granddaughter home.” This young woman has been through so much, and the family has asked for privacy to allow Hannah room to grieve and recover, but not before extending their most heartfelt gratitude towards the authorities involved, the public who supported the family, and especially the Youngs and Johns for calling in the tip that led to the recovery of Hannah.
As the investigation into the shooting of Dimaggio continues, authorities have released information stating that Dimaggio did in fact fire at the FBI tactical team, which resulted in then FBI returning fire, killing Dimaggio.
It is now time for the healing to begin. This entire nightmare has brought so much tragedy and devastation, and it will take a long time for not only the family, but the entire community to heal. Our thoughts are with everyone during this dark time.
August 16, 2013 – Hannah Anderson has broken her silence by posting on a social media website called ask.fm. The posts range from typical teenage girl stuff, to comments regarding what happened with Dimaggio. Some of the posts include Hannah stating that Dimaggio deserved to die for what he had done. She talked about Dimaggio threatening to kill her or anyone who attempted to help her. Hanna says she was denied food by Dimaggio, and had little to no sleep in the time in which she was gone. Hannah also states that Dimaggio had told her family he was having financial difficulties and was about to lose his home. Her family went up to support him and “Have fun riding the Go Karts up there, but he tricked us.” She went on to say that Dimaggio had tied her mother and brother up in his garage. 24 hours after Hannah posted on the site, her account was disabled and the posts were removed.
Hannah Anderson made her first public appearance since her kidnapping at a fundraiser held for her and her mother and brother. Hannah did not speak with the media, and the fundraiser was closed to the media. Brett Anderson stated the family is just taking it a day at a time, and the entirety of the situation has not yet fully sunk in for Hannah.
Tragically, as the reports begin to be released about what exactly happened at Dimaggio’s home, there have been statements made that Christina and Ethan were tortured before they were murdered. Details are not being released as to what exactly was found to make investigators believe this, but it hits the family that is already suffering so terribly with even more agony.
It is also being released now that the authorities are looking into a few phone numbers that Dimaggio had excessive calls to on the day and days after the fire was started. Nothing is being confirmed, but authorities are looking into the possibility that Dimaggio may have had co-conspirators. An autopsy done on Dimaggio shows that the man was shot 5 times, and likely died instantly after he fired at FBI agents. With Dimaggio deceased, the investigation can only go so far, and at this point, the family is just waiting for it to be over so they can close this chapter in their lives.
August 17, 2013 – As more information is released surrounding the Anderson case, the more questions are raised, and the stranger the circumstances leading up to the house fire get.
On the day of Christina and Ethan’s murders and Hannah’s abduction, Hannah and Dimaggio exchanged 13 phone calls before Hannah was last seen leaving cheerleading practice at 4:00pm. It is not known who picked Hannah up from cheerleading, but she and Dimaggio may have been making arrangements for him to pick her up, something which would not have been at all out of place to Hannah. Hannah and Ethan referred to Dimaggio as ‘Uncle Jim’ and it was a common occurrence for him the help out the family by giving the kids rides to places they needed to go. Hannah stated that she and her family willingly went to Dimaggio’s home together that afternoon, not suspecting anything was amiss. Hannah then states that she witnessed Dimaggio tying her mother and brother up. When Hannah was rescued, she had no idea that her family had been murdered, which means that there was a period of time when Hannah knew her brother and mother may be in trouble, but was not anywhere near them to see or hear their murders. Dimaggio tortured and murdered both Christina and Ethan, which he would have had to do before he kidnapped Hannah and rigged the house to set on fire. So where was Hannah while Dimaggio was committing the murders? Common sense says that Hannah was restrained somewhere after being threatened by Dimaggio.
So Hannah’s tied up somewhere, Dimaggio murders Christina and Ethan, even making time to shoot the family dog. Next he rigs the fire, retrieves Hannah and forces her into his car and off they went. Pretty straight forward … until this was released. A list of evidence retrieved from Dimaggio’s home listed items including, hand written ‘letters from Hannah’ to Dimaggio, clothing, toothbrushes and 2 used condoms. What was found in the remains of Christina’s car, point the motive for this attack in an entirely different direction then may have first been thought. Found was a DNA test kit. So one has to ask themselves, whose paternity was in question, which is almost always why a home DNA test kit is purchased. Something isn’t adding up just right here, Hannah may be the only person now that can provide answers to these questions.
Let’s be clear about the evidence that could support the ridiculous theory that Hannah was involved. I do not believe that Hannah has any willing involvement in what happened to herself, her mother or her brother. I just feel as though there is so much more here than what was initially portrayed, and there is the possibility that Hannah knows more than we thought. Now, whether or not she is not speaking about everything entirely because she was abused, or because she wants to protect her family’s reputation regarding the relationship they had with Dimaggio, or simply because she is a teenager and mentally unprepared to handle what is happening, I can’t say.
I do believe that the adults in the Anderson family are suffering through in the best way they know how, but I also believe that someone needs to get real with Hannah and get her the professional help which she and the rest of her family will need to get through this horrific nightmare that they had thrust upon them. The Anderson’s do not deserve to suffer through these tragedies, and I can’t imagine losing two family members and having a third abducted. What I can imagine, is that I would not be fully able to guide others through a process that I myself alone, would need help to get through. It is in this thought that I strongly believe professionals need to step in and advise the family. Instagram photos, manicures, and Justin Bieber conversation over social media sites is simply, well, very strange and a little disconcerting considering the time frame and the severity of the emotional trauma Hannah has surely suffered. I would hate to see someone take advantage of Hannah’s vulnerable state for their own selfish purposes of grandiose and fame.
While there are so many questions unanswered here, there is one thing that will not change. Christina and her children trusted Dimaggio. They allowed this man to be a part of their lives, and showed him kindness, love and respect. The Anderson’s are good, honest people, and James Dimaggio took advantage of this and betrayed the family in every way possible. He has essentially destroyed the family’s ability to trust so freely ever again, and he has left behind scars that, yes, may fade, but make no mistake, they will never disappear.
Services for Christina and Ethan will be held next Saturday, August 24, 2013, at 11:00am at the Guardian Angels Catholic Church. The ceremony will be open to the public, followed by a wake in the church hall.
I am asking everyone to stop for a moment on Saturday, and focus on the lives which were lost. The best way to honor Christina and Ethan, is to forget Dimaggio for the day, do not let him disturb the services that are meant to celebrate the incredible people that Christina and Ethan Anderson were. Christina was born into a military family two months early, earning her the nickname “Tiny Tina”, and from the very beginning it was clear that Christina was a fighter. Christina graduated from college and pursued a career in medical technology. She was driven to help others, and this was clearly displayed in the compassion she showed when a family member suffered burns to 85% of her body. Christina would visit her family member during her lunch hour, massaging her and helping her to heal in every way she could. For a period of time she owned her own holistic massage and healing practice before going to work at the Alvarado Medical Center. She spent her free time cheering her kids on in dance and football and dedicated her life to being the best mother she could be.
Ethan was a lively young man that stole hearts wherever he went. Ethan played football, both offense and defense, for the Lakeside Longhorns. However, nothing even came close to rivalling his passion for fishing. At 8 years old he already knew he wanted to be a professional fisherman, and he could often be found at his favorite fishing hole where he spent every moment that he could. Ethan also showed a love for cooking, always at his mother’s side helping to cook everything from pizza to sushi. His smile radiated and he shared an exceptionally close relationship with his sister.
The world suffered a tragic loss on the day we lost Christina and Ethan Anderson. Dimaggio robbed the Anderson family of the gift Christina and Ethan were, however, he will never rob them of the memories they hold close. It is time to mourn, and time to pay our respects, but most importantly it is time to share the love and joy that Christina and Ethan spent their lives passing around. Christina and Ethan will always be remembered for their kindness and ability to bring happiness to others. Our thoughts are with the Andersons during this difficult time.
Mourners are asked to send donations in lieu of flowers to an Anderson family fund. Donations can be made at wepay.com/donations/andersonamberalert.
As the days pass, Hannah remains directly in the spotlight, and speculations regarding her involvement in the case are reaching an all time high. Search warrants have showed that Hannah and Dimaggio had “extensive communication” leading up to the incident. Many are questioning if Hannah was actually taken against her will, and the more information released, the more is found to support the formation of these speculations.
Here’s my take on the matter. Let’s say that Hannah went willingly with Dimaggio and the two had an inappropriate relationship. Let’s go further to say that the two had been planning this for some time. If this is true, well than Hannah surely would have some questions to answer to, wouldn’t she. Her demeanor has been somewhat questionable and inappropriate in the time since she was rescued, and this I fully concede. Her demeanor is a large part of what these speculations are based on. So if all of this were true, and Hannah was involved with Dimaggio and was in on the ‘plan’, it would make her a co-conspirator rather than a victim, right? Wrong. Even if all of this were true, Hannah remains a victim. In this scenario it would remain a fact that Hannah was taken advantage of by an older man. Hannah is still a young girl, and our laws acknowledge this, hence the reason for cases such as this to be considered child abuse. Either way you look at this, Hannah is one of Dimaggio’s victims. The only thing that would change this in my opinion, would be if Hannah was found to have participated in the murders, which I do NOT believe for a second.
I know it is easy to say that Hannah must have gone willingly considering her completely nonchalant attitude, and seemingly disconnect to dealing with her own trauma and the murders of her mother and brother. It is easy to make her a villain, because of these behaviors, however we really need to focus on the fact that Hannah needs help. Help that she does not appear to be receiving. Some may claim Hannah is ‘putting on a brave face’, and I really can’t say I agree with that. I know that if she was my daughter, allowing my child to expose themselves to potential trouble on social media sites after such an ordeal, well that would NEVER happen. The bottom line that I am trying to get at here, is that I truly believe that Hannah was more involved than we were led to believe. I feel that Hannah is acting inappropriately considering everything, however I will also maintain that Hannah remains a victim, regardless of her lack of or extent of involvement. To me, something just doesn’t sit right, I think we have barely scratched the surface of this situation, and things are going to get worse before they get better.
This is my opinion, and I would like to hear yours. Please leave a comment and let me know what you think about everything that has happened and everything that is being uncovered.
August 20, 2013 – It has now been released that Dimmagio listed Hannah’s paternal grandmother, Bernice Anderson, as the beneficiary of his life insurance. It is believed that Dimaggio intended for the $112,000.00 to go to Hannah. It seems to be just one more strange and out of place detail that is emerging. Nothing seems to be adding up in the case, and I guarantee there is something more going on here than what we can imagine. I only hope that when the full truth surrounding the entire fiasco comes to light, that no more lives will be destroyed by what it reveals. Enough people have been hurt and devastated already. Personally, I think it’s time that law enforcement started asking the tough questions, and demanding answers. Enough is enough here, valuable time, money and resources are being sunk into this case that could better be used to help others if the Anderson’s don’t want to get real and stopping leading people on. Personally, I am getting really tired of seeing pictures of Hannah barely dressed, making duck faces, and hanging onto friends. Not to mention the entourage of friends she has with her everywhere she goes … someone needs to make this stop – or start focusing on other missing children that truly need the help that the Andersons are taking advantage of.
August 21, 2013 – It is now confirmed that the money Dimaggio left to Bernice Anderson was to go to Hannah. Also, Dimaggio’s family has requested DNA samples from Hannah and Ethan Anderson, which is no surprise to me. As soon as that DNA test kit was discovered in Christina’s car, it became clear that we were looking at Hannah possibly being Dimaggio’s biological child. As for Ethan, well investigators used Brett Anderson’s DNA to confirm Ethan’s identity, that pretty much proves that Brett is Ethan’s biological father. My question now becomes, Was Ethan also murdered because Dimaggio knew Ethan was not his son?
Hannah has now officially done an interview for the Today show. During the interview she stated that those 13 calls, were actually texts in which they were arranging for Dimaggio to pick her up from cheer. The letter, she says, was an innocent thing that she wrote when she was having problems with her mother, and Dimaggio was helping her sort through her problems.
As for the social media fiasco, Hannah stated that ‘it helped her grieve to take photos and show people how she was feeling’. – those selfies sure don’t show an ounce of grief.
August 26, 2013 – Yesterday hundreds of mourners packed into the church for Christina and Ethan’s memorial service. As the tears flowed, Christina’s uncle stated that the entire family are struggling to understand why Christina and Ethan were murdered. A large blown up photo of the two was carried in by Hannah Anderson. Ethan’s teammates attended the service in their jerseys to honor their friend. The beautiful ceremony honored the lives of Christina and Ethan and has provided closure to many.
August 28, 2013 – Dimaggio’s sister, Lora Robinson, has come forward to say that she never asked for DNA from Hannah and Ethan, and stated she doesn’t plan to. Robinson says that she doesn’t feel a DNA test is needed.
No new information concerning the case has been released.
September 30, 2013 – Things have cooled down slightly on the Anderson case, but new photos released again stir those feelings of unease and distrust with how Hannah Anderson has been acting since being rescued. This last photo was taken at her mother and brother’s FUNERAL. I’m sorry, but this is NOT OK. This girl clearly needs help. If my Mom or one of my sisters passed away, the only photos you would see of me would be dragging me away from their coffin as I sob uncontrollably. It’s time for people to STOP excusing this behaviour. This is NOT mourning, it is just completely disrespectful and very telling that there may be a lot more to this story than we know at this point.
