Gracie disappeared along with her mother, Grace, from their home in Jericho Vermont.  It is alleged that Grace left a note stating that she and Gracie had left and had no intention of ever returning.  It took Grace’s husband, Michael Eugene Reapp, five days to file a missing persons report with police for his wife and daughter, and even then it was only reported after Grace’s sister began to call looking for Grace.  In a move I can’t understand, Michael filed for divorce from Grace only five days after reporting her and Gracie missing, citing desertion and intolerable severity as his reasons for the dissolution of the marriage.  The couple also had two sons, Brian who was 11 and Patrick who was 7 at the time of Grace and Gracie’s disappearance, and Grace’s parents stated that it would be completely uncharacteristic for Grace to leave her sons, she just wouldn’t do that.

After filing the missing person reports, police began to question Michael.  He and grace had married in 1965 at a young age.  Michael admitted to having many extramarital affairs while married to Grace, and was actually have an affair at the time of Grace and Gracie’s disappearance.  It has been said that Michael was a physically abusive person, and Grace often suffered at the hands of his rage.  Michael maintained that Grace and Gracie left of their own free will.  In a letter he wrote to Grace’s family members shortly after the disappearance, he stated that he believed Grace had left because she was having an extramarital affair and left her sons behind because they knew about the affair.

Michael was granted his divorce from Grace a year after she and Gracie went missing.  Four short months later, he married the family’s former babysitter.  Over the years the case became cold and was filed away.  Patrick Reapp died at the age of 25 from complications with the flu.  Michael went through a couple more divorces and marriages before moving to Florida.  In 1996, investigators reopened the case and once again interviewed Michael.  The cases were reclassified as homicides and the search for Grace and Gracie once again kicked into high gear.  Extensive searches of the Reapp’s former 10 acre property were conducted over time, however authorities never turned up Grace and Gracie’s remains, nor any evidence to show what truly happened to Grace and Gracie.

On October 26, 1996, Michael left his home in Florida and drive to New Orleans.  Bank records show that Michael made a withdrawal from an ATM in New Orleans.  In November of ’96, the Reapp’s surviving son reported Michael missing.  In December of ’96, authorities located Michael’s truck at an airport in New Orleans, however there was no trace of Michael.

In June of 2006, authorities charged Michael with first degree murder for Grace, and second degree murder for Gracie.  It is believed that Michael murdered Grace after she learnt of the affair he was having, and then murdered Gracie because she had witnessed her mother’s murder.  There was still no trace of Michael and all search efforts to locate him came up empty.  The case, once again, seemed to have hit a dead end.

In June of 2010, investigators released statements that they had identified Michael as a John Doe from Yuma, Arizona.  On January 10, 1997, Michael abducted a man at gun point and stole his car.  The victim escaped, and Michael was forced to pull over on the highway after a high speed chase with police.  Michael shot himself in the head before authorities could even get to the car to arrest him.  He was finally identified after finger prints were matched to him.

Investigators still believe that Grace and Gracie’s remains are buried on the property the family owned at the time of the girls’ disappearance.  They have searched and dug the property over 25 times, and will continue to search until they have found Grace and Gracie.  This case will never be closed until we are able to bring this beautiful little girl and her mom home to lay them to rest.
