COLTON BRANDT TURNER – BODY LOCATED, CHARGES PENDING – CCA0160 – UPDATED 09.17.2014
COLTON BRANDT TURNER – BODY LOCATED AND MURDER CHARGES PENDING
I came across Colton’s case a while ago, and started researching it for an article to post for you all. Sadly, in between the time I came across Colton’s case and the time it has taken to pull everything together, this little man’s body was located, and my heart broken. I suppose I was holding onto a sliver of hope that Colton would be found alive. That hope is gone – but justice has not been served. So I am ready to fight for this angel, to be the voice he never had, to share his story.
Colton Brandt Turner was a beautiful little boy with a smile that lit up the room. Tragically though, he was surrounded by people that shouldn’t be caring for a puppy, let alone a beautiful little boy.
Colton’s mother, Meagan Rena Work, has a long history with police and is far from a stellar human being. In June of 2012, Work was charged with animal abuse which she plead guilty to after a horse tied to a tree became tangled in its lead and suffocated. In May of 2013, Work was charged with assault causing bodily injury after a bar fight with another woman. In January of 2014, a misdemeanor charge was filed against Work for possession/delivery of drug paraphernalia. Right before her arrest for charges involving Colton, Work posted on her FB that she was pregnant and had a doctor’s appointment to see the baby, that has yet to be confirmed or denied.
Also on Work’s FB page was her ‘About’ section that shows some real colors shining through, and they aren’t good colors as far as I am concerned. She wrote:

Work’s boyfriend, Michael Brandt Turner, is also a waste of skin. He has a criminal history a mile long including charges of animal cruelty, theft, assault, public intoxication, burglary and bail jumping. Quite the father figure for Colton now isn’t he.
Colton’s biological father, Brandon Lee Pelfrey, is also very acquainted with the law. In 2011, Pelfrey was sentenced to 4 years in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting a mentally disabled teen with four other men. Not a good guy, Pelfrey however, never hurt his son.
Pelfrey and his family stated that Work had recently been a no show to a meeting with CPS, and in fact had a history concerning Colton with CPS. It gets even more troublesome for me. Pelfrey has been searching for his son since he last saw him in May. When he contacted police, he was told that it was a non-emergency and was not provided ANY assistance. He continued trying to persuade police to get involved, his concern for his son very evident, and warranted.
Pelfrey also went to the National Center For Missing And Exploited Children, but without a police report, the NCMEC would not get involved. This man tracked down friends and acquaintances of Work and Turner hoping to receive any piece of information, to no avail. It was not until the photos of Colton’s injuries were sent to Pelfrey that police took action.
Police began searching for Colton after they received a call from Brianna Spieldenner, who was concerned with Colton’s well-being. Spieldenner provided police with photos of Colton with “severe bruising to his back and left side of his head in various stages of healing which suggested continued abuse.”, which she obtained after Colton’s father posted them to his FB page.
The last time anyone saw Colton besides his mother, was the fourth of July. Police quickly located Work outside a Cedar Park home, homeless and living in the same truck she and Colton lived in before his death. The truth of what happened to Colton quickly began to unveil itself, and the worst possible outcome imaginable became a reality.
Work and Turner gave the police multiple, inconsistent stories regarding Colton’s whereabouts. Work first told police that Colton was with friends in east Texas. When the friend, Lorri Hatfield, was contacted, she told authorities Work told her Colton was with family in east Texas.
When that was quickly found to be untrue and investigators confronted Work with the lie, she next claimed that Colton had been kidnapped from her vehicle, the alleged kidnappers taking Colton, a purple blanket and Work’s wallet. The more investigators questioned Work about the kidnapping, the more inconsistencies she told with the story. When the kidnapping story seemed to be a lost cause, Work then claimed she gave Colton to a couple she met at a fast-food restaurant, but she could not provide a description of the couple.
Turner, who was in jail on a probation violation, initially provided law enforcement with the same fast-food restaurant story as Work, but then admitted that Colton was dead and buried in the Austin area.
After Turner admitted that Colton was deceased, police again questioned Work who repeated the fast-food restaurant story yet again before finally admitting that Colton was dead. Work told authorities that Colton began having seizures and difficulty breathing on July 6 after hitting his head on a motel room air conditioner. She stated that Colton was unable to walk and was acting funny after the fall. Claiming that she and Turner feared they would get in trouble if they brought Colton to the hospital, they instead returned to the hotel room where they were staying and tried to treat Colton themselves by icing his head.
Turner told police that he was prepared to take Colton to the hospital, but Work insisted that they did not, and Work told police that she was prepared to take Colton to the hospital, but Turner insisted that they did not. The couple watched as Colton struggled more and more to hang onto life. At one point they contemplated just dropping him off at a hospital, but were concerned that Colton’s DNA would lead them to Meagan, then from Meagan to Michael.
Work states that when she woke up the next morning, she found that Colton had died. Now Turner told police he was not present when Colton received his head injury but felt that Work had something to do with it.
The couple waited until the sun had set and went to bury Colton’s body, Turner digging the grave, with a knife, while Work lit up the area by using her cell phone. The two then decided that the grave was not deep enough and returned to the motel with Colton’s body. Work and Turner then slept in the hotel room with Colton’s tiny little body on the floor wrapped in a purple blanket.
The next night Work insisted that Turner dig the grave deeper and Turner went to another location, this time with a shovel, to dig another and deeper grave. Colton was buried 2 – 3 feet under the ground. Turner stated that he then piled wood on top of the grave, and placed a piece of sheetrock over the wood.
Colton’s tiny body was found in a field in Austin after Turner agreed to show them where the body was. He led them straight to the grave that sat exactly as Turner described.
Work has now been charged with endangering or abandoning a child without intent to return and tampering with evidence, and Turner has been charged with tampering with evidence. More charges are pending awaiting the autopsy results and further investigation. There is no word as to how long it will be before Colton’s body is released and his father is able to lay his son to rest, but we will release any vigil, memorial or funeral dates and times as they are planned.
We will keep you all up to date on the case with any new information as it is released, so stay tuned.
